Realistic Fiction- A Chance to get Creative!

When we write realistic fiction stories we ask ourselves, “What would happen if…”

We had some great ideas: What if we had a corgi puppy as our class pet? What if Kyan had his own house? What if someone stole Ixell’s new shoes? What if Richard lived in Hollywood. Below, two of our writers, are sharing their excellent realistic fiction stories.

Civil Rights: Rosa Parks Compare and Contrast

We have read an interesting article on Rosa Parks from the Duckster website this week. Today, students will have the chance to compare and contrast the article with another article from the Scholastic reading site below. Here are some things to think about the articles when comparing and contrasting:

– Is there any new information presented by the Scholastic article?

– Did the authors write these articles for the same reason?

– Are the articles both organized in the same way?

We have been working on writing down small notes after reading  a chunk of text to check our comprehension because, “The most important thing is to comprehend!” (We say that a lot in here!) Check out Ixell, Francisco, and Amorie’s great notes. We can tell they really understood those paragraphs.

Make it Interesting, Make it Detailed!

We are writing stories around the theme of “Holidays.” A theme is a big idea that groups things together. If “Holidays” is our theme then everyone in the room must be writing about a special holiday or celebration. We picked this theme because our writers were getting stuck so frequently in their brainstorming and saying, “I don’t have any good ideas in my life!” But, when we started thinking about holidays everyone had two or three good ideas to pick from! Below are the engaging beginnings from two of our writers. Look at how they are putting in details to make their work more interesting for their readers!

Class Leaders!

On Friday, two of our classmates got to do some teaching! These students lead a science lesson in which their groups created a visual of where the sun is positioned in the sky at different times if day. They taught their groups that based on where the sun is located in the sky, the shadows will go in the opposite direction. I was so proud of how our class leaders were able to assist every student while also speaking in their respectful and motivating teaching voices!

P.S. Maryam! We miss you and we hope you had a wonderful holiday with your family. We can’t wait to see you next week!

Video Game Tales

In third grade we love to go home, play with our friends, read books, work on some math, have a healthy dinner, brush our teeth, and go to sleep! But sometimes, we also play video games. Sometimes these games are violent, but we know that the violence is fake and we would never ever put our hands on someone else or use our words to hurt someone. Mrs. Felter doesn’t really love these games. She does love Mario Cart.

This week two of our all-star writers wrote very detailed stories about video games. We are very proud of their hard work!

Amorie’ did a great job getting my attention with his first line: “Stop! They’re coming!”

Francisco filled the middle of his story with so many details, I feel like I’m playing the game!

What does Local, State, and National Government do?

Nancy, Karmyn, Amorie’, and Richard, all acted like role models during our Inquiry lesson today! They actively researched the different types of government and worked perfectly with their partners! Their work is clean and easy to read, but, more importantly, they made sure they answered what the question was actually asking! Great work Social Studies masters!
